BitMEX ceased trading, deposits and the opening of new positions at 04:00 UTC on Sept. 23, 2026, formally ending its exchange operations after more than 11 years. The exchange confirmed the shutdown on its wind-down page, shifting the immediate focus for customers from trading activity to the withdrawal of remaining funds.
BitMEX stops trading, deposits and new positions
The closure covers the core functions through which customers had used BitMEX as a trading venue: trading, deposits and new positions. The 04:00 UTC cutoff marked the official end of exchange operations, according to the company.
The wind-down was not presented as a temporary service interruption. In its notice, BitMEX states that exchange operations have ended, so customers can no longer place trades, fund accounts or establish fresh exposure on the platform.
Withdrawals remain available as account fees apply
Customers can still log in and withdraw available balances, BitMEX said, but the exchange is no longer operating for trading, deposits or new positions.
Balances remaining on the platform are subject to account fees. The wind-down notice does not specify the amount or schedule, leaving customers to consult BitMEX’s current terms and account information when considering when to withdraw.
HDR Global Trading’s strategic review
BitMEX ceased exchange operations after more than 11 years. The shutdown followed a strategic review by owner HDR Global Trading, according to CoinDesk, which credited the exchange with pioneering perpetual-swap contracts.
Customers can still access their accounts and withdraw available funds; balances that remain are subject to account fees.
