Standard Chartered has launched tokenised deposits for Hong Kong corporates, using EnsembleTX for 24/7 settlement in central bank money.

Standard Chartered Launches Tokenised Deposits in Hong Kong With 24/7 Settlement

Standard Chartered said on November 2 that it had launched tokenised deposits for corporate clients in Hong Kong, making the city the first market in its global network to offer the service. The deployment is connected to Hong Kong’s EnsembleTX platform, which has moved to round-the-clock settlement in tokenised central bank money.

The announcement puts a bank deposit represented on blockchain infrastructure into a live arrangement intended to support transfers between participating banks. Standard Chartered said those transfers can be settled in real time, 24 hours a day, using central bank money, including wholesale central bank digital currency.

The launch comes alongside early transactions involving tokenised money-market funds. But the bank has not disclosed transaction values, the number of initial users or a schedule for taking the service beyond Hong Kong.

Standard Chartered rolls out tokenised deposits for Hong Kong corporates

Standard Chartered has launched a tokenised-deposit solution for corporate clients in Hong Kong, which the bank identified in its November 2 announcement as the first market in its global network to receive the product.

Its disclosed scope is corporate rather than retail. The service connects Standard Chartered’s blockchain infrastructure to EnsembleTX and the participating-bank network, with the bank saying the setup supports real-time transfers and around-the-clock interbank settlement in central bank money, including wholesale CBDC.

Early transactions involved tokenised money-market funds. The bank did not disclose transaction values, the number of initial users or a schedule for extending the service beyond Hong Kong, according to CoinDesk. These are bank-issued tokenised deposits, not a newly announced consumer-facing cryptoasset.

EnsembleTX links deposits to 24/7 central-bank-money settlement

Standard Chartered said its blockchain infrastructure works with EnsembleTX to enable real-time transfers across participating banks. The bank said interbank settlement can occur around the clock in central bank money, including wholesale CBDC.

That settlement layer is central to the launch. A transfer of tokenised deposits can be made between participating institutions while the associated interbank settlement is handled through the EnsembleTX arrangement, according to the bank’s description. The stated objective is continuous settlement rather than a process restricted to conventional operating windows.

The Hong Kong Monetary Authority separately confirmed on the same day that EnsembleTX had advanced to 24/7 settlement in tokenised central bank money. The authority said participation had expanded to 12 banks and 20 industry pioneers, providing a wider ecosystem for the infrastructure than Standard Chartered’s own client rollout alone.

Live money-market-fund transactions test the ecosystem

Standard Chartered said China AMC, Finloop and PantherTrade had already executed live tokenised-deposit transactions and settlements involving tokenised money-market funds through EnsembleTX.

Standard Chartered has launched tokenised deposits for Hong Kong corporate clients, with EnsembleTX operating with 24/7 settlement in tokenised central bank money.

The bank also said Fireblocks is partnering with it and that HashKey has joined the ecosystem. Transaction values and initial participant counts were not disclosed.

Scale and overseas rollout remain undisclosed

The solution is being offered first in Hong Kong within Standard Chartered’s global network. The bank has not announced a timetable for extending it to other markets, and reporting on the launch disclosed neither transaction values nor initial participant counts.

The available information frames the move as an operational Hong Kong deployment tied to EnsembleTX, rather than a quantified indication of demand or a confirmed international expansion plan. According to the HKMA, the broader platform has 12 banks and 20 industry pioneers participating—but that figure is not a count of Standard Chartered tokenised-deposit clients.

For now, the next observable markers will be further disclosed transactions, additional corporate users or details on whether the Hong Kong model is carried into other parts of Standard Chartered’s network. None of those steps was scheduled in the materials released on November 2.
