Almost every racing article covers thoroughbreds. Two other codes run on the same boards, price differently, and get almost no attention.
That neglect is exactly why they are worth understanding, and also why they cost more to bet.
Three Codes, Compared
Each has a structural feature the others do not.
Greyhound Racing
Short, quick, and mathematically simpler than any horse race.
A greyhound race finishes in around thirty seconds over a sprint distance, typically with six runners instead of the large fields common in thoroughbred racing.
Fewer runners means a tighter market with less room for a book to spread margin across a long list of prices, which is a genuine advantage for the bettor.
The dominant variable is the trap draw. On a tight circuit with a short run to the first bend, a dog that breaks badly from an inside trap has very little time to recover. Draw bias is a real and studied effect at most tracks, and it is public information, not an edge anyone is hiding.
Pace is the other defining feature: races run every fifteen minutes at a meeting, and meetings run across multiple jurisdictions almost continuously.
Harness Racing
The code with a failure mode no other racing market has.
Horses trot or pace while pulling a sulky, and they must maintain gait. A horse that breaks into a gallop is required to be taken to the outside and lose ground, and may be disqualified outright depending on the jurisdiction and circumstance.
A gait break changes what a price means. In thoroughbred racing the fastest horse on the day generally wins. In harness racing the fastest horse can break stride at the wrong moment and finish nowhere, through no failure of speed.
So a leading runner's price carries a category of risk that has nothing to do with ability, and any handicapping that ignores gait reliability is handicapping half the sport.
Fields are usually larger than greyhound races and smaller than big thoroughbred handicaps, with the post position playing a similar role to the greyhound trap.
Thoroughbred Racing, For Comparison
Included because it is the benchmark everyone arrives with.
Larger fields, longer races, more variables and vastly more published form data. Market depth is far greater, margins are sharper because the volume attracts competition, and the ecosystem of analysis around it dwarfs the other two codes combined.
That depth is a double edge. A thoroughbred market is better priced and harder to beat, precisely because everyone is looking at it.
Minor Codes Cost More
The pattern is consistent and it follows from attention.
Greyhound and harness markets are thinner at most crypto sportsbooks, and thinner markets carry wider margins. Fewer bettors compare prices across books, so books face less pressure to sharpen them, and less liquidity means the operator carries more uncertainty and prices it in.
So the trade is real in both directions. Simpler races and public draw bias on one side, wider margins and shallower boards on the other. Neither cancels the other out, and a bettor who does the analysis but ignores the price is paying away whatever the analysis found.
Comparing the same market across books matters more here than on football for exactly that reason.
One settlement point that applies across all three codes: a non-runner voids the market it was in, with the stake returned. That is standard treatment and worth confirming in your book's rules before a meeting.
